Plan Before You Grocery Shop

Do you go to the store without a solid plan for your meals that week? Do you get home and stare at the groceries wondering what you’re going to do with them? Menu planning is the answer that you’ve been looking for!

Think of menu planning as goal-setting for your grocery store trips.  The past two weeks, Dr. Jake and I have been making a stronger effort to reduce inflammation by tackling the Wahl’s Diet (more on that to come!). It focuses on good proteins and increasing vegetables in order to fuel your cells with all the nutrients they need without supplementation. Dr. Wahls developed this protocol after a change in diet helped reverse her progressive MS. As we took on this change, we were worried and overwhelmed by our next visit to the grocery store. So we took a deep breath, sat down, and did some menu planning.


***Insider tip: Another great way to make grocery shopping and meal prep easier is to pick a few staple meals and stick with them. Dr. Jake and I eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch with slight variations and then change up dinner to keep our palates from getting bored. This helps take a lot of stress off us during the week since we can run on foodie autopilot for most of the day!

To get started with menu planning, you’ll first need to understand how many meals you’ll be making that week and for how many people. Once you have the right count, decide what you want to make for those meals. Since it’s just the two of us, Dr. Jake and I make dinners that can last for multiple nights (with larger families you could make a little extra to have leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch). We also know which days entail late nights and time our menu to have re-heats those nights. Once we know what we’re making, we make up the list. This list is our guide through the grocery store. By going into the store already knowing how much and what we need, we can avoid extraneous purchases that hike that grocery bill up while also getting in and out of the store quickly.

With a little time spent menu planning, grocery store shopping and eating healthier don’t have to mean giving up your sanity!
