The NUCCA Story That Began It All
Holy smokes, it’s happening! Ever since hearing about blogs, I’ve been intrigued to share my experiences and knowledge of health in the hopes of helping others. Growing up I was involved in so many physical activities – dance, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, fishing, hiking, the list goes on. And for the most part, I survived with only minor aches and bruises. But when I got to high school, my injuries were becoming more serious and took longer time to recover from. I was playing 3 sports at a time and realized first that I needed to settle down. Just as I was regaining focus and vigor, I suffered the injury that threatened to end my playing days for good.
At a lacrosse game, I missed a pass and the ball hit me directly on the top of the head. I felt dizzy and sat out for the rest of the game. That weekend I went to watch my sister’s basketball tournament but couldn’t stand the gym because of the noise and lights producing intense nausea, dizziness, and headaches. If I had known then what I know now, I would’ve recognized that I was concussed, but with little public knowledge on concussions then, I didn’t understand what was happening. My mom and I went to see the pediatrician that Monday but instead of being told that I needed rest and banned from playing, the doctor stated I had muscles spasms and I’d be fine. The next day, I played in another game and got hit in the head again. Cue bigger headache, jaw pain, nausea, and dizziness and so to the ER I went.
***PSA Rant – Parents, kids, friends, family, if ANYONE you know suffers from a hit to the head OR the body and develops dizziness, nausea, headaches, memory loss, or confusion, they most likely are suffering from a concussion and need physical AND mental rest. A second hit can do a lot of damage and in some cases can even cause death. Concussions are a serious issue and should be managed appropriately by a health care professional. Please speak up and take a stand to prevent long term effects!
Lucky for me I didn’t suffer from Second Impact Syndrome, a sequence of events leading to brain swelling and death. However, my concussion symptoms that most likely would’ve resolved in a week or two if I had received proper care, are still present today. So after a “watch and wait” period, I was referred to a neurologist, whose training told her to give me prescription medications. At age 15 I was taking large doses of an antidepressant used for chronic pain. It seemed to decrease the headache but another small hit to the head caused them to roar back. For my dizziness, vestibular physical therapy was then recommended which helped to an extent. I went to so many appointments and doctors that year, I’ve lost count. But the final straw came when trying to attend a summer camp. I wasn’t able to ride in the elevators without severe dizziness, frustrated and angry, I called my parents to come get me.
Recently my mom had found an upper cervical specific chiropractor whose website described patients that she helped. The more my mom read, the more she felt like this was the place I needed to be, and with the events of summer camp, we made the decision to travel from Philadelphia to Boulder, CO to see if this could be an answer. Long story short, at age 15 the curve in my neck was going in the opposite direction and the top two bones in my body were twisting in opposite ways. My upper cervical chiropractor specifically found a problem and then corrected it with an adjustment. She explained that by removing the stress on my spine, my body would instantly heal better. Within a month I could almost ignore my headaches and I wasn’t getting major bouts of dizziness. Since that experience, I have been on a mission to provide this type of work to others. Along the way I found the specific technique that I believe allows me to be able to give the best for my patients, NUCCA. And fortunately for me I found a man as dedicated and as passionate about helping others with NUCCA as I am – so born TEAM DODDS of the Upper Cervical Chiropractic Group! NUCCA chiropractic has changed my life and I would love to share that with you! Leave a comment let me know about your chiropractic triumphs. Can’t wait to connect 🙂
