The Real Secret to Mindset Change – Alexandria, VA Chiropractor

I am a firm believer in the innate potential that human beings possess.  Allowing people to express their health potential has become my entire life’s work.  As I have striven to tap into my own potential and helped others to do the same I have come across a lot of different tools and strategies.  They are all things you have heard of before: affirmations, goal setting, journaling, expressing gratitude, stepping outside of your comfort zone.  These are all tremendous tools and the people I know that have best tapped into their potential use one or more of these tools on a consistent basis.  I have tried all of these tools and more with varying degrees of effort and success and have found myself frustrated or disappointed by all of them at some point.  I was taking the steps I was told to take, why could I not see the results that I was searching for?

Several years ago I was recommended a book by a colleague called Psychocybernetics by Maxwell Maltz which opened up Pandora’s box for me and allowed me to look at things from a brand new perspective.  Maxwell Maltz was a plastic surgeon who accidentally stumbled across an extremely powerful psychological and sociological realization.  He found that with his work he would perform surgeries that would drastically alter the appearance of an individual literally overnight but people responded radically differently to the results.  Some would instantaneously change their personalities, they literally became different people with their new appearance.  Others would be furious with him saying that he hadn’t changed anything at all – even when they had their before and after pictures sitting in their hand that looked completely different.  Instead of brushing the observation aside he pursued the issue which became the rest of his career.

What he found through decades of study is that all human beings have incredible innate potential.  He found that our thoughts are an absolutely essential to how we project ourselves into the world and the impact that we have (psychocybernetics literally means “to steer oneself”).  What he also found is that there is a middle man that never gets discussed that is equally as essential.  That is the concept of self-image. The flow of life he says happens as we tap into our innate potential through our thoughts and that is directed through the prism of our self-image.  The conclusions are astounding.  It means no matter how many positive thoughts you think, how hard you work, if your self image is not congruent with the life you want or the results you are going for, you are fighting a losing fight.  He says the changing of your self-image is the most important step to work on first before anything else matters.

The book is full of different exercises to change your self image which exceeds the scope of this post.  I did want to conclude by sharing what the most effective tool for me has been which I stumbled on by trial and error.  Two words.  What if?  Before when I would think of a goal or something I never had before, I was stuck fighting a wave of potential downfalls, challenges that would have to be overcome, reasons that it may not work.  I would try to fight this and it is a tough route to go.  I found by asking myself simply “what if?” I was able to sidestep the whole confrontation in my brain.  What if this cool thing happened?  What if I was able to get this thing that I never had before?  It has become a fun game for me that has quickly allowed thoughts and feelings to come through that I was not able to generate before.  By asking what if you literally put your mindset into the framework of the self-image you desire.  The results are powerful.

With all of the self help advice that we all have been exposed to, don’t forget the most important step of all is your own self-image.  I highly recommend reading the book for yourself to get the full story and set of tools.  In the meantime, put two words in your pocket and see how it works for you.  What if?
