Reduce Heartburn With These Natural Alternatives

You just couldn’t turn down that catered-in barbeque at your work lunch meeting but now you’re paying for it. That burning pain in your chest and constant burping remind you of your last appointment with your doctor. The truth is that you are not alone, heartburn or GERD affects 60% of the adult population. Traditional medical management of GERD includes a variety of drugs that aim to neutralize or decrease stomach acid. With persistent symptoms, surgery may also be recommended. If left untreated, GERD can affect the esophagus enough and progress into Barrett’s esophagus, a precursor to esophageal cancer.

Although symptoms of GERD may reduce with acid blocking medications, a decrease in acid production in the stomach can also lead to a decrease in nutrient absorption. The acid in the stomach is a vital piece in digestion and decreasing the amount can cause a lack in proper nutrition for cells. You may not have been aware of this and other side effects of GERD medications. The reality is that GERD can be managed with simple lifestyle changes. Digestion is greatly impacted by what you feed your body.

– Journal about your GERD episodes.  This can help you identify and therefore more easily avoid food

             triggers.

– Losing weight by cutting out refined sugars and processed grains helps reduce inflammation in the gut

– Choose soothing foods like aloe juice and ginger root teas or natural antacids like bananas and apples

– Get help to quit smoking and reduce your alcohol intake

Since digestion is a natural body process that requires proper nerve control of the muscles and organs responsible, it’s also important to check to make sure your nervous system is functioning properly. Maintaining proper spinal alignment with chiropractic adjustments has also been shown to help reduce GERD.

With these simple steps, you can easily take control of your own digestive health!
