Importance Of Spinal Health For Kids
Most patients seek out chiropractic care to help them with a certain ache or pain which is why most get a confused look when I mention that I love seeing kids. It gives me an opportunity to explain the effects that a poorly functioning nervous system can have on the body and how chiropractic helps improve nerve function by restoring spinal health. I think the next question that pops up is – how does a baby’s or a kid’s spine gets misaligned? Researchers have looked into spinal health in newborns and have found that as many as 70% become misaligned at birth. With the increased utilization of interventions like C-sections, forceps, and vacuum suction, increased mechanical tension is being placed on a newborn’s head and neck. The use of certain medications like Pitocin and pain medication can also cause fetal distress and make for a more stressful birth. This is why it’s important for newborn’s to also be checked for a spinal misalignment. It is always easier to help create a healthy kid then try to fix years and years of physical stress in an adult. The good news is that checking for and correcting a spinal misalignment in kids and newborns tends to be less complicated compared to an adult. This is the reason why kids usually respond quickly!
Seemingly healthy kids with “normal” childhood complaints like colic, ear infections, and asthma/allergies are specific examples of troubles of children that may have a misaligned spine. Treatment of these complaints tends to be administering medications, which is not ideal. Even over the counter medications should be avoided. For example, according to recent research, children who are given pain relievers containing acetaminophen (found in Tylenol) are twice as likely to suffer from asthma. Maintaining a properly aligned spine however helps boost the immune system, making children healthier from the get go. Other complaints like trouble breast feeding and bed wetting may also be related to stress on the spine. When the spine isn’t in the proper alignment, turning the head can be difficult which may make it harder for a newborn to breastfeed. You may notice difficulty on one side but not the other, a good indication for a spinal check-up. A spinal misalignment can also affect nerve function. The function of the bladder is controlled by the nervous system which is a great reason to make sure it’s functioning properly!
Another consideration of checking for misalignment early in childhood is the possible link between early misalignment and scoliosis. Kids are often checked in school for signs of scoliosis with an option for bracing or surgery if the curve is severe. Most commonly, the cause of the scoliosis is unknown but recent case studies show an improvement in scoliosis with specific chiropractic care. In any case, preventative measures are best which is yet another reason making sure your children have a properly aligned spine is an important part of healthy growth and development. The earlier the better! In general, people who seek chiropractic care are less likely to use pain medication, less likely to be hospitalized, and spend less on health care. For any and all ages, recognizing the importance of proper spinal alignment is a key component of whole health.
